After WandaVision episode 5, Avengers: Endgame‘s scrapped post-credits scene is now canon. Marvel Studios kept their Phase 4 plans secret for quite a while, waiting for the Infinity Saga to be officially over before announcing their future plans for the franchise during San Diego Comic-Con 2019. But as it turns out, they had initial plans to tease Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany’s Disney+ series before it was properly confirmed, which is something WandaVision episode 5 taps into.
WandaVision‘s first three episodes heavily-leaned on its sitcom inspirations such as I Love Lucy, Bewitched, and The Brady Bunch, but by its fourth episode, the storytelling perspective shifted, showing what it’s like outside Westview. This helped make the series’ true narrative clearer. WandaVision episode 5 tackled its story from both sides of the mystical barrier, with additional information revealed with regard to Scarlet Witch’s whereabouts before she took over the New Jersey town.
As revealed by SWORD Director Hayward during his team’s briefing with Darcy Lewis, Jimmy Woo, and Monica Rambeau, Wanda stormed their offices and stole Vision’s body ninie days prior to the events of episode 5. This checks out with Endgame‘s planned post-credit scene, which was shared by Paul Bettany. It turns out, there was a plan to show Vision’s corpse in a body bag drawer through a stinger, but before they could move forward with it, MCU architect Kevin Feige came in and decided against it. Given this development, it’s safe to say that the events of the tag were supposed to directly lead to SWORD’s possession of Vision’s dead body until Scarlet Witch came in and took it. This effectively links together Endgame and WandaVision, showing those events really did happen, even if they ultimately didn’t make it into the former.
Marvel Studios opted to forego their traditional post-credits scene in Avengers: Endgame — making it the very first MCU movie to do so. Instead, they featured the metal-clanking sound of Tony Stark building Mark I in a cave in Afghanistan. Ultimately, this creative decision was for the best as the unorthodox reference heightened the sense of nostalgia, not to mention a final tribute to Iron Man, who heroically died in the fight against Thanos. Additionally, it would’ve also spoiled the fact that Vision’s story continues past the events of the Infinity Saga, which instead allows for a major reveal in WandaVision.
Interestingly, during Vision and Wanda’s intense argument towards the end of WandaVision episode 5, the synthezoid confirmed that he has no memories. He didn’t get into specific details but based on their conversation, it seems like Vision is totally in the dark about what happened before his life in Westview, including dying at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. The episode in general also confirmed that he’s unaware of Wanda’s actions that created their fantastical world. Since SWORD’s intel came from CCTV footage of Scarlet Witch and it doesn’t reveal how the organization collected Vision’s body in the first place, perhaps WandaVision can more fully repurpose Avengers: Endgame‘s unused post-credits scene and incorporate it on the show.
