Sex And The City Revival Will Include More Original Series Characters

Expect some familiar faces when the Sex and the City revival And Just Like That hits HBO Max. Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis are all returning for the limited series as Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte, respectively. The iconic series is expected to return to screens sometime later this year, with filming set to start in the spring in New York if everything goes according to plan.

Kim Catrall will not be returning as Samantha. The actress has been outspoken about her thoughts concerning a return to the series. A third Sex and the City movie was long in the works, but plans were derailed when Catrall wasn’t willing to return and things couldn’t come together. The series seemed to be done for good until recently when HBO Max announced the return of the series. Details are slim, but Parker has said the series will follow the three women in their 50’s as they navigate modern life in New York.

Parker, Nixon, and Davis won’t be the only familiar faces, though. HBO chief Casey Bloys told EW to expect the return of some other familiar characters when And Just Like That premieres. Bloys doesn’t say who will be coming back, but that both Parker and original show creator Michael Patrick King both have said that they expect to bring back some familiar faces from the original series. Bloys ultimately says that the show will be reflective of real life in that some friends stay in your lives while others move on, a not so subtle nod to Catrall’s own moving on.

I think it would be fair to say there will be some familiar faces for sure. In talking to Sarah Jessica and Michael Patrick King, they are not trying to tell the same story. This is very much about women in their 50s. Now they’re in a different stage of their life. This is not going to be the women going out like they would have in their 30s. By virtue of that, it will be different storytelling, But I think you’ll still see some familiar faces. As in real life, you keep some friends and other friends move on and you meet new friends. So hopefully it will be reflective of relationships in real life.

The return of Sex and the City is highly anticipated and not only because fans will get to see Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte again. One of the best parts of the original series was its ability to weave in other character’s stories who were tangentially related to the core group’s own lives. It’s hard to reckon with the fact that Samantha won’t be returning – in fact, some feel that you can’t bring back Sex and the City without its arguably most popular character.

Still, there are plenty of ways to fill that gap. Sex and the City‘s cast of side characters was as robust as its main cast and there are plenty of options to bring back in to the fold. In addition to those characters, both Charlotte and Miranda will have kids who are more grown up now and it’s possible we’ll see bits of their lives, too. And Just Like That, in tackling the women’s current problems, could dive into what it’s like to raise teenagers in New York City in 2021. Sex and the City may not be the same without Samantha, but HBO is moving along anyway and it sounds like they’ll be bringing back a slew of characters to make up for Catrall’s glaring absence.
