HBO’s Perry Mason will receive two new showrunners beginning with its second season. Perry Mason premiered in June of 2020 and stars Matthew Rhys in the titular role. The series is a 1930s legal period drama based on the short stories of American author/lawyer, Erle Stanley Gardner. The show also stars John Lithgow and British actress, Juliet Rylance. Iron Man himself, Robert Downey, Jr., serves as an executive producer. The series focuses on the life and struggles of Los Angeles defense lawyer, Perry Mason, who is hired for a monumental court case in the wake of the Great Depression.
HBO and WarnerMedia have signed a three-year deal with Jack Amiel and Michael Begler of Cinemax’s The Knick, who will now join the writers’ room as showrunners for Perry Mason‘s second season. According to THR, Amiel and Begler will take over because season 1 showrunners, Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones have “opted to move on to other projects.”
Because Amiel and Begler have prior experience showrunning early 20th century period television dramas – The Knick (2014-2015) focused on the lives of staff workers and patients at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital in the early 1900s – they are sure to be adept in handling the premises already established by Fitzgerald and Jones in Perry Mason‘s first season. Additionally, Amiel and Begler’s work on The Knick garnered them a prestigious Peabody Award, so there is no doubt that the pair will continue their success on Perry Mason. With over 8 million viewers in its first season, a star-studded cast, and two fresh voices in the writers’ room, Perry Mason is likely to see an increase in viewership in season 2.
