Monster High Animated Show and Live-Action Film In Development

The Monster High dolls will be adapted into a Monster High animated series and a live-action musical TV movie. The doll collection first launched in 2010 and has been a hit for the company behind Barbie and American Girl. This isn’t the first time that the Monster High dolls have been adapted into a series. Nickelodeon has previously adapted TV specials based on the Monster High dolls starting in 2010.

The Wrap confirmed that ViacomCBS is partnering with Mattel to create a Monster High animated series and live-action musical. Both projects are inspired by Mattel’s human-monster hybrid doll collection. The projects are both set to release in 2022. The dolls were initially created to promote inclusivity, and Mattel Television general manager Fred Soulie thinks their message comes at the perfect time.

“’Monster High’s strong message of inclusivity is more relevant than ever.Nickelodeon shares our passion for the brand and its purpose having worked on the franchise when it first launched more than a decade ago. They are the ideal partners to bring these beloved characters and their stories to life through episodic television and the live-action television movie.”

Both the animated series and live-action musical will air on Nickelodeon. However, two separate teams will be working on each project. Nickelodeon Vice President Claudia Spinelli will be behind the TV series with showrunner Shea Fontana. For the live-action musical, Nickelodeon Senior Vice Presidents Zack Olin and Shauna Phelan will oversee the project written by Jenny Jaffe, Greg Erb, and Jason Oremland. No casting details have been announced for either project. However, TV musical movies like High School Musical, Camp Rock, and Descendants have boosted careers and created a huge fanbase for many up-and-coming actors. Additionally, these TV musicals have been a hit for Disney, so it’s a smart move for Nickelodeon.

The Monster High animated series will follow fan-favorite characters like Clawdeen Wolf, Draculaura, and Frankie Stein as they navigate the hilarity of high school in the hallowed halls of Monster High.
