Lidl’s Christmas advert takes savage swipe at rival Aldi’s Kevin the Carrot

The battle of the Christmas advert is finally upon us and this year even Lidl is pulling some entertaining punches.

The budget supermarket chain has finally released its Christmas advert to rival that of heavyweights such as John Lewis, Coca Cola and McDonalds.

Unlike this year’s other heartwarming clips, Lidl has attempted to put a comedy spin on its animated advert.

It has even gone as far as taking a savage dig at rival budger supermarket Aldi by mocking their own Christmas characters.

The entertaining clip starts with the typical picturesque winter scenes that we all know mark the start of a tear jerking Christmas message.

However, that is quickly brushed aside as we are abruptly reminded that this is a budget-friendly advert from Lidl.

The advert starts with a snowy scene before breaking out into song

“Could a friendship be ahead? No it’s a Christmas ad from Lidl with great prices instead,” the lyrics go.

Among mouth-watering clips of Christmas dinners, the voiceover then pulls a punch at Aldi, whose own Christmas advert features a cute-looking Kevin the Carrot.

“We don’t need cutesy characters when carrots take this good,” sings the Lidl voice over.

Lidl quickly reminds viewers that this is not your typical Christmas advert

In reference to some other famous adverts, the clip continues:  “There’s usually a moment when we want you to feel sad. But we don’t have time, look sparling wine. This cheese will make you feel so glad.”

Lidl’s cheeky dig appeared to be in direct response to Aldi, who depicted the story of Kevin the Carrot and his mission to make it home to be with his carrot family.

Ryan McDonnell, Commercial Director at Lidl GB has also explained that the brand wanted to give viewers a little bit of entertainment this Christmas.

He said: “We all need a little light relief this year, so we wanted our Christmas ad to show customers that our commitment to high quality at Lidl prices means everyone can believe in a great Christmas – and we had a bit of fun doing it too!”

A representative for Lidl has been contacted for comment on their cheeky video.
