Alexander’s non-answer doesn’t come as much of a surprise; as he notes, he wouldn’t be able to say anything if he were in contention. However, it certainly sounds like he’s open to joining Doctor Who if the opportunity presents itself. He would be an exciting choice for the show and bring a new energy to the role of the Doctor.
Of course, there are a lot of “if”s attached to the speculation about Alexander. At this point, Whittaker’s exit remains uncertain, as the BBC has yet to confirm or even comment on it. Many have enjoyed Whittaker’s work as the Thirteenth Doctor and would be disappointed to see her leave, though cast exits are of course built into the DNA of the show. The next Doctor will have big shoes to fill one way or another. Even if Alexander is ultimately chosen to join Doctor Who, it will likely be awhile until an official announcement is made. If season 13 does end up being Whittaker’s last, it seems likely the show will remain focused on giving her a proper sendoff before revealing who will take her place. Hopefully, more information about Doctor Who‘s future comes to light soon.
