It’s A Sin Star Won’t Comment on Doctor Who Casting Rumors

It’s a Sin star Olly Alexander won’t comment on speculation he’ll be the next star of Doctor Who. Alexander has garnered attention recently for his role as Ritchie Tozer on It’s a Sin. The British limited series is set in the ’80s and ’90s and follows a group of gay men during the HIV/AIDS crisis. It’s received critical acclaim, with many praising Alexander’s performance in particular. Understandably, some are already thinking about what the talented actor might do next.

Meanwhile, long-running series Doctor Who is in a period of transition. Jodie Whittaker currently stars as the Thirteenth Doctor, the first woman to take on the role. She’s led the show since season 11, but there are reports she’ll exit after the upcoming season 13. Though the BBC refused to comment on the speculation as of January 2021, it hasn’t stopped many from assuming Whittaker is leaving the series. Two of the Thirteenth Doctor’s companions, Graham and Ryan, exited in the holiday special, adding fuel to the fire.

Due to the reports about Whittaker’s departure from Doctor Who, as well as Alexander’s well-received performance in It’s a Sin, some are speculating he’ll be the show’s next Doctor. Appearing on Heart Breakfast, Alexander was asked about the rumors but wouldn’t say anything concrete:

I mean, if I was [doing it] do you think I’d be able to tell you? It’s true I am very indiscreet but my lips are sealed…I think it would be amazing. It’s an amazing role, and an amazing show.

Alexander’s non-answer doesn’t come as much of a surprise; as he notes, he wouldn’t be able to say anything if he were in contention. However, it certainly sounds like he’s open to joining Doctor Who if the opportunity presents itself. He would be an exciting choice for the show and bring a new energy to the role of the Doctor.

Of course, there are a lot of “if”s attached to the speculation about Alexander. At this point, Whittaker’s exit remains uncertain, as the BBC has yet to confirm or even comment on it. Many have enjoyed Whittaker’s work as the Thirteenth Doctor and would be disappointed to see her leave, though cast exits are of course built into the DNA of the show. The next Doctor will have big shoes to fill one way or another. Even if Alexander is ultimately chosen to join Doctor Who, it will likely be awhile until an official announcement is made. If season 13 does end up being Whittaker’s last, it seems likely the show will remain focused on giving her a proper sendoff before revealing who will take her place. Hopefully, more information about Doctor Who‘s future comes to light soon.
