Innocent viewers left reeling over unexpected twist as Matty’s killer exposed

As ITV’s Innocent series two finale kicked off on Thursday, viewers were still torn over who they thought the killer was.

But many fans were left reeling when Sam Wright was eventually confirmed to have murdered teenager Matty Taylor, with it unexpectedly emerging that they were having an inappropriate relationship.

The series saw the police reinvestigating the murder of Matty which had occurred five years earlier, after the release of Sam’s wife Sally Wright.

Sally, Matty’s teacher, had been wrongly convicted of the crime and also faced accusations of an inappropriate relationship herself with him.

But new evidence confirmed she was not at the scene of the crime, and that she was not spotted kissing Matty as claimed.

Anna Stamp had made this up out of jealousy – so the question was who really did kill Matty?

As the episode went on, different characters looked more guilty and more likely to have murdered the teenager.

But it was the missing bottle neck of the broken glass bottle used to kill the 16 year old that was being repeated as the missing clue.

Karen, Sam’s new partner, became prime suspect, and investigators tried to find ay evidence linking her to the crime.

Viewers were not convinced though, as many questioned if she could in fact be covering for her daughter Beth who had been targeted by Matty before his death.

Suddenly this was seemingly confirmed when Bethany confessed to the murder, claiming she’d hit him in the neck and hidden the evidence in the woods.

There was another twist though when Sally’s ex-husband was soon revealed to have lied about his alibi – and Sally found the remains of a note written to him from Matty years ago.

The note was Matty telling Sam how he had told him he loved him, threatening to tell Sally the truth about their fling.

Bethany was protecting her mother it seemed, as Sam was exposed as having had an inappropriate relationship with Matty in scenes not everyone saw coming.

He confessed to the fling, revealing he had been hiding who he really was – before saying he was in love with Sally’s student.

So he allowed Sally to be accused of all sorts and be sent down for murder, when in fact he was the killer.

After a row, Matty threw a bottle at Sam and threatened to spill the truth leading to him chasing him with the bottle and hitting him with it.

Viewers were reeling over the twist, after being led to believe it was Bethany for most of the episode.

Others guessed the twist was possible but could not believe he’d actually done it, and betrayed Sally.

One fan wrote: “Didn’t see that coming, I should pay more attention.”
