Falcon & Winter Soldier Star Praises Sam’s Relationship With His Sister

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Adepero Oduye praises the relationship between siblings Sam and Sarah Wilson. Marvel Studios’ second Disney+ series roared onto the streaming service last weekend and plunged viewers into another thrilling adventure. This time, Sam (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) are taking center stage as they face new threats and a world irrevocably changed by the events of Avengers: Endgame. Only one episode has arrived so far, but The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has already revealed several new things about Sam and Bucky’s lives outside of being superheroes.

For Sam, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 1 took him back to his Louisiana hometown and introduced audiences to his sister and nephews. Oduye plays Sarah, said strong-willed sister who has been struggling to keep the Wilson family business alive while Sam is elsewhere saving the world. Prior to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, audiences knew little of Sam’s home life, but the series has already given them an excellent idea of what the bond between Sam and Sarah is like.

Oduye recently spoke to ET about her Marvel debut, where she discussed the significance of Sam and Sarah’s relationship in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Oduye described their story as “a heart in the midst of all the action stuff” and that it is “deep, strong, honest and authentic.” That, more than anything, is what Oduye appreciates  about their bond. She added, “So, in those moments where it’s not always hunky-dory, they’re able to give that to each other, whatever that is, on each side. And there’s always a coming back. The love is at the core, always and forever. They’re very clear about that.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s premiere featured several poignant moments, including a quietly devastating one where Sam and Sarah are unable to get a loan from a bank. That scene, as well as the argument that comes after it, reveals key things about the siblings’ characters; Sam still had some faith that his status as a superhero would be enough to save the day, while Sarah knew all too well the reality they face as Black business owners. It’s interesting to see these two personalities come together, and as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier continues, hopefully Sam and Sarah’s relationship will continue to be a highlight.

Sarah will definitely be sticking around for a bit, as a Falcon and the Winter Soldier promo teased Bucky’s arrival in Louisiana, where he at least briefly flirts with her. Even with just one episode under her belt, Sarah has cemented herself as a compelling character, and her interactions with Sam have helped to finally deepen his world. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier still has several episodes left, so hopefully there will be more Wilson family moments ahead.
