Derek Draper tells Kate Garraway he wants to ‘give up’ in distressing video call

Kate Garraway has opened up about husband Derek Draper’s “worryingly unpredictable” mental state which has led to some distressing FaceTime calls.

However, the incredibly positive GMB presenter, 53, has done her best to push him forward with constant words of encouragement and praise during his rehabilitation.

Derek, 53, has spent the last 12 months in hospital after contracting coronavirus in March 2020 and was placed into a medically induced coma.

The author, who has been described as having the worst Covid infection than any living patient, regained minimal consciousness in July and uttered his first word “pain” in October.

Derek begins to cry as he says: “I don’t know how to cope, I don’t know how to cope.”

But Kate remains firm: “You don’t know how to cope with it. OK. I know you feel like you’re trapped in your head and it’s terrifying. But you’re coming home, you’re coming back to your life and you will be the person, even better than you were before. You will be.

“I will find a way to make it better. Okay. I promised you that I would save you and I’m gonna save you I will find a way, but you just have to hang in there.”
