Comedian Eddie Izzard Now Exclusively Using She/Her Pronouns

Comedian Eddie Izzard recently shared that she’s now using she/her pronouns. The influential English stand-up is known for a unique, stream-of-consciousness style of comedy that often crosses into surreal territory. She published a memoir in 2017 titled Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death, and Jazz Chickens in which she writes candidly about her personal backstory and creative process (but fails to deliver on the promise of jazz chickens). Izzard co-wrote the movie Six Minutes to Midnight, a war drama that premiered this year.

Izzard clarified her pronouns Thursday while modeling in Sky Arts TV’s drawing competition Portrait Artist of the Year, Deadline reports. The comedian discussed her gender identity with a contestant and said she feels “very positive” about the conversation. Izzard came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in the 1980s and has incorporated jokes about gender into her act for years. She currently identifies as genderfluid and says she “just [wants] to be based in girl mode from now on.”

I try to do things that I think are interesting. This is the first program I’ve asked if I can be “she” and “her”— this is a little transition period.

Fans have been sharing their support for the influential comedian over social media. Izzard, who’s long been an active advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, also got a shoutout from the Human Rights Campaign on Twitter for “encouraging others to live their life openly and authentically.” Izzard previously spoke to NPR about struggling with the changing terminology available to trans and gender non-conforming people when coming out in the ’80s. Unsurprisingly, the skilled standup was still able to spin those slim pickings into comedy gold. It will be great to hear her new material now that times have changed.

Izzard boasts an extensive acting resume with roles across film, TV, theater, and video games, recently providing voiceovers in an animated Green Eggs and Ham adaptation and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance for Netflix. Izzard played supporting roles in two recently released movies: Six Minutes to Midnight and The High Note, a dramedy about the music industry starring Tracee Ellis Ross and Dakota Johnson.
