Nigella Lawson baffled fans after sharing a recipe for her banana skin and cauliflower curry with one person saying “2020 just got more bonkers.”
The 60-year-old chef returned to our screens with her new series, Nigella’s Cook, Eat, Repeat, on BBC Two, showcasing innovative recipes including lamb shanks, fish finger bhorta and noodles, as well as sharing her favourite kitchen hacks.
But it was the final recipe, a banana skin and cauliflower curry that really surprised viewers.
Explaining her inspiration for the dish, Nigella said: “I can’t bear throwing anything away. And when I found out that you could eat banana skins, I couldn’t get in the kitchen fast enough. It’s a revelation.
“And for those who feel hesitant about the idea, I assure you that you would never guess my banana skin curry had banana skins in it. You wouldn’t even think bananas.
“I love that this is a dish made with something that would normally go in the bin, although that wouldn’t be enough to justify its presence in the programme. It’s there because it is just a glorious thing to eat.”
She told viewers not to waste discarded banana skins and instead to chop them up and add them to a simmering turmeric and cinnamon curry sauce to give it texture and flavour.
But for skeptical foodies, she has an alternative ingredient you could try, as she said: “If trying the banana skin and cauliflower curry is one step too far for you, you can of course use the base for any vegetables – or, indeed, meat or seafood!”
The recipe had viewers confused as one took to social media to say: “A lot of things have made me go WTF in 2020 but nothing’s come close to Nigella pouring kettle water over two brown banana skins.”
Another added: “I am not up for the banana skins, I’m sorry, I just can’t.”
A third said: “They’d better watch this on Gogglebox.”
“2020 just got more bonkers,” wrote a fourth.
Whereas one person said: “I feel like @Nigella_Lawson making something delicious out of old banana skins is the perfect metaphor for good things emerging in the final weeks of one totally awful 2020.”
Nigella also referenced the recipe on Twitter, writing: “I hope I didn’t traumatise you too much with the banana skins (I promise you the curry is divine).”
Might be too late for that it seems! What did you think of the recipe? Let us know in the comments below.
