Star Trek: Picard creator Akiva Goldsman has compared the Star Trek franchise to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of output. Star Trek is a property that’s been running since the original series debuted in 1966. Since its debut, 13 movies and nine television shows taking place in the grander Star Trek universe. The franchise is one of the most popular in American history.
In 2018, Goldsman signed on to help create Star Trek: Picard, a show that follows the exploits of Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) after the destruction of planet Romulus. With the help of Stewart’s return to the role, the series received critical acclaim once it premiered in January 2020 to CBS All Access—the platform has since rebranded as Paramount+—and filming for a second season is now underway. Another Star Trek universe series called Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is in development, under the supervision of Goldsman, ensuring that there are new stories continuing to come out of the science fiction universe.

When speaking on Star Trek: Picard, and the amount of Star Trek stories that exist on both the small screen and large, one can begin to wonder if the franchise has been exhausted. According to Goldsman, the answer to that question is a resounding no. The executive producer discussed the topic of whether Star Trek has hit its “natural maximum” in a new interview with THR, where he compared the iconic property to what Marvel has done with its cinematic universe. Through his perspective, “you can never have enough Star Trek shows.” Goldsman explains:
I can’t speak for CBS. Look, we all do the same thing, which is to look at the example that really works — like, you cannot have enough Marvel shows. I’m waiting for Falcon and the Winter Soldier tomorrow, and I watched the Loki trailer 19,000 times. So with that as the example, you can never have enough Star Trek shows. — but we’ve all seen the other side where it doesn’t work. Star Trek has that heart-space for some people, especially now, after the world was revealed for being worse than we thought it was, I’m a big believer in hard-won happy endings. It doesn’t mean it’s not hard getting there, but I’m just going to choose to believe that there can be good outcomes.
A comparison between the Star Trek franchise and the entries within the MCU feels like a natural case for Goldsman to make. Marvel Studios has made 23 films over the last 13 years, with Iron Man being the movie that started the whole collective adventure. In addition to the film slate, 13 television shows have come from the comic book giant, with the upcoming Loki marking their 14th post-Avengers: Endgame entry. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg with last December’s Disney’s Investors Day announcing 61 new movies and TV shows in development at Marvel.
With shows like Star Trek: Picard, the Star Trek universe continues expands upon the initial story, ideology, and unique characters Gene Roddenberry created more than half-a-century ago. Aside from Star Trek: Lower Decks and the previously mentioned Strange New Worlds, the franchise is branching out into children’s entertainment with the upcoming Nickelodeon animated project, Star Trek: Prodigy. Needless to say, if there’s a limit on the types of story possibilities available for the franchise, they are nowhere near hitting it.
