One of Britain’s oldest twins Doris Hobday has died after coronavirus battle

Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan emotionally shared the devastating news that former guest, and one of Britain’s oldest identical twins, has passed away aged 96.

Doris Hobday, sister to Lil, lost her battle with coronavirus, which her twin has also been fighting – just days before she was due to get the vaccine.

The former GMB and This Morning guest and her sister were a hit with fans a year ago, and in 2019, as they repeatedly appeared on the show and brought their cheeky attitudes with them.

Just weeks ago it was confirmed that the twins had contracted Covid-19, but recently sadly Doris lost her life, with her death announced on the programme on Wednesday.

Good Morning Britain broke the news that cheeky former guest 96-year-old Doris, twin sister to Lil, has lost her battle with the coronavirus

After a two-week fight, her twin sister Lil, who was inseparable from Doris, is now fighting on – and is aware of her sister’s passing.

Opening the show in moving scenes, Piers confirmed the news and revealed they had been holding it back – with Susanna then releasing the family’s statement.

Susanna stated she died on Tuesday January 5, and she will be laid to rest, buried next to her husband, who she lost 11 years ago.

Her funeral will be held next month.

Her family released a statement to the show which read: “Both were determined to live until 100, they had so much to live for…

“It’s just so cruel that Covid has stopped Doris like this. Our thoughts go out to all the families who have experienced a loss through Covid and we urge people to take this seriously.

Doris and Lil were inseparable

“Doris was only a few weeks away from being safe! With her vaccine letter arriving two days after her death.

“If you are offered the vaccine please take it, do not refuse it. Doris didn’t get this choice.”

The hosts confirmed they had found out at the start of the week but kept the news back, before revealing the news on Wednesday.

Susanna and Piers paid tribute to the cheeky guest

A clearly moved Piers opened the show saying: “Two of our favourite guests on this programme Doris and Lil, they were Britain’s oldest twins, we reported a week ago that they both contracted coronavirus.

“Very sadly Doris has lost her life. Lil is still with us battling hard. She’s aware of what has happened to her long loved twin, but it’s a very sad day for her family, for Lil and for us here at GMB.

“They brought such a ray of sunshine to our lives with their infectious humour. They were a wonderful duo and have been inseparable sisters for 96 years.”

Lil and Doris were a hit on GMB and This Morning

Doris’ letter for her vaccine arrived just days after her passing, with her family saying how cruel it was that Covid robbed her of the life she still had ahead of her.

Susanna and Piers offered their best wishes to Lil, who has set up a fund page to raise money for a charity close to her twin’s heart.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
