Michael C. Hall has revealed why it was finally time to bring Dexter back. Hall played the main character, Dexter Morgan, in the award-winning Showtime series for all eight seasons and will be returning to reprise his role in the upcoming revival. The show’s series finale was highly criticized by fans and is regarded as one of the most controversial finales ever.
Dexter‘s return as a ten-episode limited series was first announced back in October. Clyde Phillips, who led the show for the first four seasons, will be returning as showrunner, and most recently actor Clancy Brown has been cast as the main villain. The new episodes will follow Dexter’s antics in upstate New York ten years after the season 8 finale.
In an exclusive for ET, Michael C. Hall revealed that Dexter returning now was a product of the right script at the right time. He elaborated that he’s actually seen several revival ideas that haven’t worked out: “I’ve been approached, unofficially, many times in the streets by people who have ideas. But… I think there have been probably, before this, three legitimate ideas or concepts of what we might do and none of them felt right.” But it seems the stars had finally aligned as the right script and show creators became available at the same time:
“This one, a lot of it has to do with time passed. This is going to happen in real time, as if as much time has passed since the finale happened. And yeah, we kind of just got the creative band back together again. Clyde Phillips is back, who was the showrunner for the first four seasons, running the show. And Marcos Siega, who is one of the directors. We’re gonna shoot it like a long, 10-hour movie. It was a combination of the scripts and the timing. I always thought maybe the time will reveal itself when it’s the right time to do it and it did. And I’m excited. I was just visiting the sets the other day and it’s real. It’s really happening.”
With such a controversial series finale behind them, Hall promises that the show will try and rectify its previous failings. He added, “The appetite for the reboot is a way facilitated by the fact that it was a less than satisfying ending for people. I want to find out what happened to the guy just as much as everybody else.” While he isn’t revealing any details about the character or plot, he did comment on what he would personally like for Dexter: “I don’t know if they’re going to go for it, but I’m angling for him to be running his own pizza restaurant. Just because, you know, I don’t need to explain why that would be awesome.“
The right-place-right-time situation could be a blessing for fans – even for those who liked the finale because it provides creative freedom. The eight-year difference gives writers an endless amount of opportunities to create a completely new story for Dexter, giving him and the show a restart of sorts. Additionally, having Clyde Phillips back could mean plotlines that fans will be more impressed with, since the first four seasons (which Phillips headed) are widely regarded as the best of the series. Hall’s enthusiasm about the revival is great news for fans who are expecting another amazing Dexter experience.
