Kathryn Hahn partly based her WandaVision character on a famous TV witch from the ’60s. The first Disney+ MCU TV show is said to be “half classic sitcom, half MCU spectacular,” which has been made clear by the several trailers, TV spots, and posters fans have gotten for WandaVision thus far. Each episode of WandaVision will be based on a different decade of television, drawing inspirations from shows like I Love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, and Full House, to name a few.
While Scarlet Witch and Vision are obviously the main characters of the series, WandaVision will introduce new characters as well. Two of the biggest characters shown in the trailers are the grown-up version of Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and a mysterious character named Agnes (Hahn). Despite being in most trailers for the series, details on Hahn’s character have been kept a secret. People have long theorized that Agnes is actually Agatha Harkness, a witch from the Salem Witch Trials who served as Wanda’s mentor in the comic books. The trailers and TV spots for WandaVision have supported this theory, showing Agnes in a witch outfit, and being the one character (besides Wanda and Vision) present in the different decades the show is set in. Now, Hahn has shed some more light on her “Nosy Neighbor” character.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Hahn explained her character is partly inspired by Samantha and Endora from Bewitched. Hahn compared Wanda and Agnes’ relationship to different classic TV pairings such as Samantha and her mother Endora, Laverne and Shirly, and even Lucy and Ethel from I Love Lucy. The chemistry between you and Elizabeth is amazing. What different TV pairings from the past did you study to help inform the vibe and tone between the two?
Kathryn Hahn: I mean, Lucy and Ethel, of course. So many there. Yeah, Lucy and Ethel, [Samantha] and her mom in Bewitched, any of the neighbors that would just come in Laverne and Shirley. All of them; every single one you could possibly think of.
While the question further defines Wanda’s relationship with her neighbor, the fact that she mentioned Samantha and Endora from Bewitched is yet another clue that Agnes isn’t just a “Nosy Neighbor.” Despite Agatha Harkness being an ally to Wanda in the comics, many speculate that Hahn’s character will be the villain in the series. Other rumors have name-dropped characters like Grim Reaper, Doctor Doom, and Nightmare, but as of right now, most signs point to Hahn being the series’ villain.
Samantha and Endora in Bewitched are far from villains, but mentioning the characters further shows how much inspiration WandaVision is pulling from iconic TV sitcoms. Samantha Stephens, played by Elizabeth Montgomery, is one of TV’s most famous and recognizable TV witches, so it makes sense that Hahn would partly base Wanda and Agnes’ relationship on such a popular ’60s show. WandaVision continues to appear completely different than anything Marvel fans have seen before, and thankfully, fans don’t have to wait that much longer to see it on the small screen.
