Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen dodges a question about the show’s rumored use of the ‘House of M’ storyline from the comics run of the same name. Olsen has played the role of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch since Avengers: Age of Ultron. She will reprise the role in Disney+’s TV-PG WandaVision; the much-anticipated live-action MCU show debuts January 15. The show’s plot is being kept a secret, but what is known is that it will see Wanda and Vision (Paul Bettany) living in several different sitcom worlds from throughout the past five or six decades.
WandaVision also features Kathryn Hahn, Randall Park, Kat Dennings, and Teyonah Parris. Early trailers make it clear that at least part of the show is set in Wanda’s head, not least because of the shifting sitcom locations, but also because Vision, who was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, is still alive. There’s also a wine bottle seen in an early trailer that has led to a fan theory that the show will loosely adapt the ‘House of M’ comics that see Wanda suffering a mental breakdown leading her to erase all mutants from existence.
Olsen was asked about that ‘Easter egg’ in a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The TV host asked Olsen several questions related to fan theories about the show and mentioned the wine bottle perhaps being a connection to ‘House of M.’ Rather than confirming or denying it, Olsen laughed during the question and appeared to brush off it off, only saying that the props guy who worked on WandaVision would be “very clever” if he’d made the reference deliberately. Kimmel incorrectly assumes Olsen’s answer means it isn’t a reference and moves on. You can read Kimmel’s question and Olsen’s full response below:
Kimmel:
What about the idea that this wine bottle, the Maison Du Mepris, it translates to “House of Misery” which could be saying that the series is based on the popular comic House of M in which Wanda has a breakdown and there’s a lot of weirdness going on.
Olsen:
Our prop guy Russell would be a very clever man if he put that in.
Olsen’s avoidance of the issue is very smart, as she not only manages to deflect the question but doesn’t answer it at all, neither confirming nor denying that the bottle of wine is a ‘House of M’ reference. Naturally, the actor wouldn’t want to spoil anything about WandaVision before it airs, and so if the series does adapt the popular comics storyline, she wouldn’t confirm it anyway. But her deliberate deflection seems more suspicious than an outright denial, so there is still weight to the theory.
Add Olsen’s question-dodging to another ‘House of M’ reference from a more recent trailer, and fans will only be even keener to watch WandaVision when it debuts just over a week from now. Whether the show adapts the ‘House of M’ story, sets it up for a future movie, or doesn’t connect at all, there’s no doubt it’s going to be a strange and fascinating addition to the MCU.
