Javicia Leslie’s official Batwoman suit has finally been unveiled, and it has some significant differences from Kate Kane’s costume. Ruby Rose’s departure from the Arrowverse has paved the way for a new heroine to take over the cowl. When Batwoman season 2 premieres, Leslie will take over as the lead through the character Ryan Wilder. While Ryan will initially wear Kate’s old costume, Warner Bros. TV has confirmed that in the third episode, she’ll unveil her new Batsuit to Gotham City. The costume, designed by Arrowverse’s Maya Mani based on a creation by Ocean Drive Leather, has a lot of new features that were specifically done for the new character.
Ryan will, just like Kate, also be donning a wig as part of her disguise, but hairstylist Janice Workman created a brand new wig with Cory Roberts working on the make-up style. While Kate had her signature red wig, Ryan’s wig is a curly-haired one that has red streaks. It’s appreciated that Ryan’s Batwoman will still have a wig as that is part of the hero’s disguise in the comics while also getting to do it in a refreshing way. Kate’s cowl had a sudden change in the middle of Batwoman season 1 and it seems that Ryan’s cowl will go back to that as hers have a chin strap.
Despite it being a new hero under the cowl, this design actually lines up more with the comic book version than Kate’s suit did. For Kate, her initial costume was a solid adaptation of what Batwoman wears in the comics. There were a number of things that the Arrowverse changed that took away some of the fun of it. However, thanks to Ryan’s new design, it seems that some of those comic features will be part of it. While Kate’s gauntlet was almost completely black while having red thin streaks running down them, Ryan’s will be completely red, which is what they do look like in the books.
This was even hinted at back in August during DC FanDome through Jim Lee’s Multiverse artwork where Ryan was seen with several DC characters. Although what didn’t translate from the design that was teased there was the bigger and sharper Batcowl. The decision to brighten up and add more red to Ryan’s costume is an appreciated change as it feels more like the Batwoman look from the comics. Based on the released images, the interior of Ryan’s cape will be redder than Kate’s ever was. Despite having a shade of red in her cape, Kate’s cape was mostly black on the inside.
Lastly, Ryan’s utility belt, while mostly based on Kate’s design, has a few small but neat changes. The belt is spotlighted by a big red Bat in the middle that is a lot sharper and makes it look more memorable. Despite not being able to see them in the official promotional images, Warner Bros. TV confirmed that Ryan will be wearing shorter boots in comparison to Kate. Whether or not they are all red like the ones in the comics remains to be seen for the time being. Only time will tell what other changes Ryan is making to the costume after Kate mysteriously disappears. Batwoman season 2 premieres in January 2021 which is when fans will first get to see the costume in proper action.
