WARNING: Spoilers for Cobra Kai season 3.
Cobra Kai‘s showrunners tease any character from the Karate Kid films could appear in season 4. Although the Karate Kid sequel series released its first season back in 2018, it wasn’t until 2020 that it found a wide audience. The first two seasons were exclusively available on YouTube Premium until 2020 when Cobra Kai moved to Netflix. The world’s biggest streaming service already acquired the series to debut season 3, which is now out and gave it an early season 4 renewal.
Now that Cobra Kai season 3 is out on Netflix, fans have been able to binge the next chapter of the story. The show has managed to continue the lives of Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zapka) from the original Karate Kid, and season 3 brought back several other characters from the past. Elisabeth Shue finally returned as Ali Mills to help mend Daniel and Johnny’s rivalry. Meanwhile, The Karate Kid Part II characters Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita) and Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) also were featured. The finale also concluded with a possible tease that Terry Silver from The Karate Kid Part III is coming in season 4.
In a new interview with TVLine, co-showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg were asked about the possibility of Ali coming back in future seasons. Heald answered the question by not answering it. Instead, he would only say that they don’t rule out any character from the Miyagi-verse returning in Cobra Kai‘s future.
“We won’t comment on what our future plans are with anybody who’s a legacy character from those movies other than to say that we have a long story left to tell. We always leave the door wide open for anybody from the Miyagi-verse to come in and out of the series.”
With the returns of Ali, Kumiko, and Chozen in Cobra Kai season 3, each season of the show continues to add more legacy characters to the ongoing story. Although the showrunners didn’t confirm Ali will return, it won’t be surprising if she does down the line. Her brief appearance in season 3 had a big impact on Daniel and Johnny, even if theories about her being the one to save Miguel Diaz’s life or the mother of Tory turned out to be wrong.
For Karate Kid fans hoping more characters from the franchise’s past will appear in Cobra Kai, this comment from the showrunners means anything is possible. Thomas Ian Griffith could be featured prominently in season 4 if the Terry Silver tease is paid off. If Karate Kid 3 is going to be a big influence on season 4, then perhaps characters like Mike Barnes and Jessica Andrews could be included as well. And since the showrunners mentioned anyone from the Miyagi-verse is in consideration to return, perhaps that will eventually mean Hilary Swank’s return as The Next Karate Kid‘s Julie Pierce. Based on how many characters they’ve used already, there’s no telling who Cobra Kai will bring back next.
