WandaVision Is Currently The Most Popular TV Show in the World

WandaVision is currently the most popular TV show in the world, according to Parrot Analytics. The series, which debuted in January, follows Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and her husband Vision (Paul Bettany) through a series of wacky hijinks and disturbing incidents in the mysterious town of Westview. Outside the town, the agency SWORD is investigating the anomaly surrounding it (also known as “The Hex”), which they believe to have been caused by Wanda’s superpowers. Evolving through decades of sitcom standards, the genre-bending metaseries explores Wanda’s deteriorating mental state and why she’s come to the town in the first place.

WandaVision is Disney+’s first television series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The streaming service debuted in November 2019, with plans for new TV shows that take advantage of a range of Disney-owned intellectual property. This includes the Star Wars universe, National Geographic, High School Musical, the Disney Princesses, and more. While WandaVision is the first MCU series, there are a number more in the pipeline, including the upcoming Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Disney can certainly count their MCU streaming series experiment as a resounding success, as Parrot Analytics has named WandaVision the most popular TV show in the world. According to Forbes, Parrot Analytics measured this outstanding metric “by sifting through social media, fan ratings, and piracy data to represent audience demand.” Per this analysis, WandaVision became the most in-demand show in the world ahead of episode 6.

Parrot Analytics shared specific data that revealed WandaVision didn’t begin rising to the top of the heap until episode 3, when it became the “second or third” most in-demand series. It held in the top three until the release of episode 5. WandaVision‘s shocking cliffhanger helped skyrocket the show to the #1 spot, where it has remained according to Parrot Analytics’ last available data. That being said, Disney+’s decision to release one episode of WandaVision per week (rather than the Netflix method of dropping an entire season at once) may have also contributed to the series’ growing popularity.

Unlike other streaming originals on other platforms, WandaVision has the benefit of taking place within an existing and already ultra-popular universe. This is also true for Disney+’s other megahit, The Mandalorian. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is arguably the most popular film franchise in the world. Eight of the top 25 highest-grossing films of all time are set in the MCU, including the #1 biggest blockbuster, Avengers: Endgame. Considering Wanda was last seen in that film, it makes sense that the show would enjoy comparable success. With three more weeks of WandaVision episodes ahead, and plenty more bombshells expected to drop, the series stands a good chance of maintaining its #1 spot.
