Phillip Schofield takes swipe at Dominic Cummings after ‘attack’ on government

Phillip Schofield couldn’t help bring up the controversy surrounding Dominic Cummings, the former aide of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and his trip to Barnard Castle during the coronavirus pandemic.

At the time, Cummings faced calls to be sacked from the government over the trip that many believed was breaking the rules during lockdown, as Covid-19 continued to spread across the UK.

Johnson stood by Cummings at the time, defending the trip which his colleague said was for an eye test – while this story has now changed with him claiming death threats to his wife and child led to the move.

Since then, Cummings has left his role and just this week the former aide launched an attack on the government’s handling of the pandemic.

Speaking about what went on behind the scenes, Cummings has made a number of claims about Johnson, parliament and Health Secretary Matt Hancock, many of which attacked them over how things had been dealt with.

Cummings suggested there were unnecessary deaths from the virus in the UK, because of mistakes made and he suggested those in charge were not fit for the job.

But speaking about the claims on This Morning on Thursday, host Phillip brought up Cummings’ own controversy, after it was said he’d asked for more transparency.

Calling his comments “revenge” Phil asked guest Beverley Turner: “Let’s take an overview first of all, this was revenge…”

She agreed: “It was revenge yes, it was also extremely gripping and very watchable. For many of us the last year has been about wondering what is actually going on behind closed doors.

“Dominic Cummings himself said they needed to be more transparent. A lot of this confusion and mistrust perhaps that we’re at now wouldn’t have happened if they’d been more honest at the start.”

Beverley then called Cummings' comments a "damning and absolutely excoriating attack on the government", with Holly Willoughby agreeing with her

Phil then interrupted: “It’s a shame he wasn’t a bit more honest about his trip to Barnard Castle, but we will come back to that….”

She said: “It was and it was extremely detailed as well!”
