This version of ‘Mortal Kombat’ isn’t the ubiquitous one that has taken the gaming world by storm, but rather a spin-off of the universe’s main universe. ‘Mortal Kombat Legends’ follows the story of Earth’s universe’s version of Darkseid, with the primary antagonist being Kronika, who is the spirit of an evil sorceress from the universe’s main universe.
Our heroes are besieged by Shao Kahn’s forces, forcing Raiden and his warriors to agree to take part in the last Mortal Kombat, which will determine the fate of the planet. To defend Earthrealm, our heroes must now go to Outworld. Simultaneously, Scorpion must locate the ancient Kamidogu before it is utilized to resurrect the One Being, which would result in the annihilation of the cosmos. Unlike the last film, which focused on Scorpion, Battle of the Realms follows Liu Kang and the Earth’s defenders as they face a final Mortal Kombat battle. Overall, Battle for the Realms is a well-animated, engaging, and entertaining film that includes many of the elements that Mortal Kombat fans like.
Earthrealm’s heroes are fending off an invasion by Outworld’s ruler Shao Khan when he and the thunder god Raiden agree to conduct one last Mortal Kombat to determine Earthrealm’s destiny once and for all. Revenge, directed by Ethan Spaulding and written by Jeremy Adams, is another film by the same team. Earthrealm’s heroes are fending off an invasion by Shao Khan, the Emperor of the Outworld. Even as a more serious threat to all worlds looms over them, Khan and the thunder god, Scorpion, escape Hell and are sought by the new Sub-Zero for a special gadget he carries, as well as vengeance for his brother’s death.
There are a lot of characters in a Mortal Kombat game, and Battle for the Realms is no exception. Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Raiden, Jax, and other Earth characters are prominently portrayed with Shao Khan, Kitana, Jade, and Shang Tsung. There’s also Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Shinnok, Smoke, and more characters. Despite the large cast, the film focuses mostly on Liu Kang as he accepts his destiny as Earthrealm’s defender and prepares to fight Shao Khan. His arc is great, even though it isn’t given much depth, since he is still confident in his abilities and purpose, while having misgivings at times. Kang is the story’s protagonist, and Jordan Rodrigues gives him a lot of depth.
The second major character, Scorpion, continues his journey from the last film, trying to come to terms with his flaws and how he was duped. He has a few memorable moments, and his journey is eerily similar to that of the new Sub-Zero, as the need for vengeance consumes both of them. Several Scorpion moments will thrill fans of the character, who are one of, if not the main faces of the series. Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, who are still feuding as Johnny attempts to court Sonya in all the wrong ways, are among the other characters that share the focus. As the arrogant actor-turned-fighter, Joel McHale gets a lot of chuckles, while Jennifer Carpenter portrays the badass Sonya with a nice mix of stoicism and honesty.
Other characters have their moments to shine, but their arcs aren’t as developed due to the large cast. A few characters make some significant choices, which the film glosses over in order to move on to the next beat. It’s because there’s so much going on, including the last Mortal Kombat, Scorpion’s goal, Sub-revenge, Zero’s, and a few more narrative threads that tie everything together. Battle of the Realms tries to balance each story and succeeds for the most part, but it still covers much too much ground. Finally, everything has come together, although not completely smoothly.
For a product like Mortal Kombat, the storyline is almost secondary since the fighting is what people play the games for and want to see in any film. The action is beautifully rendered, coordinated, and brutal, and it does not shy away from the horrifying deaths that Mortal Kombat games are renowned for, especially in a few famous Mortal Kombat bouts. Battle of the Realms, like Scorpion’s Revenge, makes extensive use of the games’ x-ray vision to assess the extent of damage to a fighter’s organs and bones.
The x-ray aspect occurs only when it is required, and the bulk of the character pairings are exciting. The visuals are stunning throughout the flick. Mortal Kombat battles, on the other hand, take place in a single arena rather than going to various places, since the games may become tedious after a while. Other scenes and the finale, though, make up for it.
Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms is a fun and thrilling feature that seems to have been created just for Mortal Kombat aficionados. The film’s major characters have lovely moments and grow, but others suffer from critical choices that aren’t as well thought out. The action and animation make up for the dearth of narrative material with their choreography and highly gruesome fights. Mortal Kombat is a franchise with a long history, both in terms of official games and unofficial spin-offs. The franchise has had a number of games over the years, mostly on the Genesis and Game Boy systems, but also several on the more recent platforms.
