I’m A Celebrity star Vernon Kay has admitted he broke down in tears in camp because the experience left him emotionally and physically “drained”.

The telly star, 46, says he missed his wife Tess Daly and their two daughters and was left exhausted and hungry by the meagre rations and gruelling challenges.

He admitted he wasn’t scared to let his feelings out during his time on set as he “felt comfortable” with his co-stars.

According to the Daily Star Sunday, he said: “I still cry at Forrest Gump, so I expected to cry while I was on I’m A Celebrity. I even cried in the interview I did at the start of the series.

“And when you’re in there, you are emotionally drained because you are missing your family. I felt comfortable with that group of ­people that I could cry. I didn’t think about trying to stop myself from ­getting emotional.



Vernon lived off rice and beans for most of the stint

“You are physically drained, too. We were eating nothing but rice and beans most of the time. I lost two-and-a-half stone – that’s weight I didn’t really have to lose.”

He finally got home yesterday, but was unable to reunite with Tess as she was busy filming Strictly Come Dancing.

Vernon he had to watch her on the show before they were finally reunited at midnight.

The telly star shared a picture of Tess on his TV screen while he watched from the sofa and told her to “hurry home!”

He wrote: “Hurry home @tessdaly!! @bbcstrictly what a show, @craigrevel you’re welcome too!!

“(So good to be dust and smoke free! No Rice and Beans!!!!).”

Vernon hadn’t seen his wife and daughters since October, when he headed to Wales to isolate before his three-week stint in the castle.

Speaking before he got home, Vernon admitted he would have to wait until the early hours of Sunday morning to catch up with his wife.

He told The Sun : “We’re going to be reunited after Strictly. I’ll get home and see the girls first, Tess will get back about midnight.” 

Vernon went on to reveal he was pleased his wife and two daughters were “proud” of him for making it to the I’m A Celebrity final.
