The first Girls5eva trailer has officially dropped. Tina Fey serves as an executive producer on the project along with Jeff Richmond and Rober Carlock. The comedic series will be centered around the fictional ’90s pop group Girls5eva. Twenty years later, after the has dispersed and its members have moved on with their lives, Dawn (Sara Bareilles) wants to bring the band back together. Along with Bareilles, the all-star cast includes Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell, and Ashley Park.
Peacock finally dropped the first trailer for the upcoming series, which was initially supposed to be a part of Peacock’s fall lineup. As the trailer announces, it will officially hit the streaming platform on May 6. In the trailer, Dawn informs the other band members that even though they haven’t played together for 20 years, their band Girls5eva has once again booked a gig. While Dawn seems hesitant, the other women are excited at the prospect of stepping back into the spotlight. Dawn uses the reunion as an opportunity to shoot her shot as a songwriter.
Not only does the trailer tease a fun spoof of the girl band reunion trope, but it also shines a light on the problematic aspects of the music industry. As these women revisit their days as teenage pop stars, they realize the pervy ways of their old manager, Larry. This time around, the women will reclaim the power they never had in their pop careers. The series also focuses on the premise that life doesn’t have to get boring after turning 30.
As per Peacock’s official description, Girls5Eva centers on “a one-hit-wonder girl group from the ’90s that reunites to give their pop star dreams one more shot.”
