Because there are flashbacks in Nightmare of the Wolf that enable us to witness the beginning of the animated film’s main character, we stated Vesemir’s narrative began in 1100. The events of Nightmare of the Wolf, on the other hand, took place in 1165, around a century before the events of season 1.
We go back to 1100 in Nightmare of the Wolf to observe Vesemir’s upbringing and learn why and how he became a Witcher. We also witness the life he decided to leave behind in order to pursue his desire of earning money as a Witcher, who is a monster slayer with magical abilities who can live for centuries.
From there, we’re transported to 1165, where the events of Nightmare of the Wolf take place. The whole idea of the film is around how the Witcher’s, who were previously many, were reduced to a small number as a result of the events in Nightmare of the Wolf. We also saw the youngster who would grow up to be Geralt, since it was revealed in the movie’s concluding scenes that Vesemir was the one who taught Geralt and some of the remaining young Witchers.
The most essential aspect of Nightmare of the Wolf is that it explains why there are so few Witchers left in the main chronology and how the events of the film have influenced how people see Witchers even after a century.
1210 is the second timeline.
Timeline 2 takes place 110 years after Vesemir’s childhood in the year 1100. Because this timeline focuses mostly on Yennefer’s origins, it was also when much of the early section of The Witcher season 1 took place.
The puzzling aspect is that folks unfamiliar with The Witcher mythos are likely unaware that sorcerers like Yennefer and Witchers like Geralt have the ability to live for hundreds of years. That’s why, in season 1, people won’t be able to determine that the multiple periods are separated by decades.
For those who are curious, the episode 1 encounter between Geralt and Renfri took place in timeline 2. Let’s take a more linear look at the events in Timeline 2.
- Episode No. 2 The second episode of The Witcher’s first season serves as the official start of the season’s chronology. It focused on Yennefer’s childhood, when she was sold to Aretuza to train as a sorceress. Tissaia de Vries, who plays an important part in the series, is also introduced here.
- Episode 3: By converting her malformed body into the lovely lady she eventually became, Yennefer makes a significant sacrifice. We witness her presenting herself to her new self at the Aretuza ball, where we also meet a young Foltest, who we would later see as an adult in one of the other realities.
- 1st Episode Geralt is first introduced in Episode 1. Following the events that unfolded after he met Renfri, he became the Butcher of Blaviken. Of course, due of the amazing sword battle towards the conclusion of episode 1, many of us were hooked on the series from the start. Oh, and in this episode, we also met the magician Stregobor.
Timeline 3 – between the years 1239 and 1249
Geralt’s exploits as a Witcher after becoming the infamous Butcher of Blaviken are the focus of Timeline 3. This is also the period in which we met Jaskier, a popular figure who works as a minstrel. He soon became the unofficial bard, singing songs about Geralt’s travels to supplement his income.
The most perplexing aspect of this scenario is that Jaskier was meant to be about 18 years old when he encountered Geralt for the first time. It was also meant to be many years between his contacts with Geralt, since becoming Geralt’s traveling companion took some time. What’s more perplexing is the fact that, despite being a regular person, Jaskier never aged a day in the years between his encounters with Geralt.
Still, let’s take a more linear look at timeline 3.
- Episode No. 2 Part of episode 2 is said to have taken place in 1239, when Geralt encountered Jaskier. They are both kidnapped by a bunch of elves in this episode. Instead of fighting, Geralt is able to negotiate his way out of the situation, and we are introduced to Jaskier’s over-the-top song “Toss a coin to your Witcher,” which essentially retells the tale of the episode and Geralt’s heroic deeds. Jaskier was able to slowly increase Geralt’s reputation as the Butcher of Blaviken thanks to his efforts.
- Episode 4: Yenn is now a sorcerer, and he was in a carriage with Queen Kallis of Lyria when they were assaulted by a mage assassin. The assassin succeeds in murdering the queen, while Yennefer tries to rescue the queen’s baby, but it dies. She eventually failed, and Yenn went renegade, no longer functioning as an advisor to a king. In addition, we discover in the episode that Yenn’s only desire (which she gave up when she altered her body) was to have a child of her own. The queen and her child were also slain because the king of Lyria preferred a boy over a girl.
- 3rd episode We meet an earlier version of King Foltest in Episode 3, which reveals that Yenn’s past and a significant portion of Geralt’s chronology are decades apart. However, they got one thing wrong here: Foltest seems to be older than he should be, since he appears to be in his 50s or 60s rather than his 30s, as is the truth. Nonetheless, in this episode, Geralt accepts a contract from Foltest, who wants him to assassinate his daughter-turned-Striga, who became such after being cursed.
1249 is the fourth timeline.
We see more of Geralt and Yennefer in the fourth timeline, which appears to be the timeline in which the two of them meet. It has been 39 years since Yennefer was sold to Aretuza in timeline 1. However, Geralt and Jaskier have only known each other for a few years (by Witcher standards).
The many adventures that Geralt and Yennefer face together take up a large portion of the fourth timeline. In this timeline, we meet Queen Calanthe and Pavetta (Ciri’s mother), and we learn about the beginnings of the fifth timeline (Ciri’s narrative).
- 4th episode Pavetta, Cir’s mother, refuses to marry the man Queen Calanthe wants her to marry in this episode. An armored knight arrives out of nowhere to claim Pavetta, citing the “Law of Surprise,” which states that a man who is rescued by another must grant his rescuer a boon whose nature is unknown to one or both parties. Due to a curse, the knight (called Duny) is revealed to have the face of a porcupine when he removes his helmet, but that didn’t stop him and Pavetta from falling in love. Pavetta, unwilling to surrender her daughter to Duny, initiates a fight, which leads to Geralt side with Duny owing to the sacrosanct nature of the Law of Surprise, and all of this culminates in the curse being broken.
Duny offers to compensate Geralt for his troubles, as the Witcher uses the Law of Surprise in an effort to escape without a payment, but ends up owing the right to Ciri unintentionally when everyone discovers that Pavetta was genuinely pregnant. In a nutshell, the episode demonstrates how Geralt’s fate is ultimately linked to Ciri’s. This is why the events in this chronology are so crucial to comprehending The Witcher’s tale.
- Episode No. 5 In this episode, we see Yenn and Geralt meet for the first time while Geralt is attempting to save Jaskier from a djinn’s mortal wound. Yenn desired to capture the djinn for herself in order to reclaim her capacity to carry children. When Geralt rescues Yenn from the djinn, things between the two start to get hot.
- 6th episode. Geralt and Yenn cross paths again while hunting a dragon not long after they first met. There wasn’t much going on in this episode, save for the fact that we got to glimpse Geralt’s true feelings for Yenn.
5th Timeline – 1963
Ciri’s tale is the center of Timeline 5, since she was born after the events of Timeline 4. She is roughly 13 or 14 years old at this time, considering it has been 53 years since Yenn’s backstory and 24 years since Geralt and Jaskier met. Even though some people believe that this is the future and that Geralt’s experiences with Jaskier and Yenn take place in the present, this is the “main” timeframe of the narrative. As a result, everything prior to Ciri’s tale is a flashback.
- Episode 7: Geralt was aware of the kingdom of Cintra’s approaching demise, the same land that Queen Calanthe controlled. By virtue of the Law of Surprise, his sole motivation for returning to Cintra was to claim Ciri as his right. Calanthe, on the other hand, refused to follow the law and ordered Geralt to be detained. Meanwhile, the Niflgaardian Empire was on the verge of annihilating Cintra.
- Episode 1 introduces Calanthe, who loses a war against the Nilfgaardian Empire, an empire that evolved to be so powerful in just a decade. Keep in mind that throughout the events of episode 4, Calanthe mocked Nilfgaard at the grand ball. So the empire was just repaying her, but there were those inside the empire who wanted Ciri for themselves.
- Episode number seven. Returning to episode 7, we see the sorceresses and mages working together to discover a strategy to combat the strong Nilfgaardian Empire. This is also the point at which Yennefer returns to her people, working with her other sorcerer sisters.
- Episode 1 shows Cintra being devastated by the empire while Geralt remains imprisoned. When we initially see this, we have no idea why Geralt was imprisoned or how many decades have elapsed since his encounter with Renfri. Calanthe instructs Ciri to locate Geralt of Rivia before hurling herself out the window to face an immediate death rather than risk being kidnapped as the Nilfgaardians approach. Ciri leaves with the druid Mousesack, who has been devoted to her family for years, despite the fact that they are being pursued by a dark knight. From here on forward, everything follows the story’s primary chronology.
- Episode No. 8 Fringilla and the empire are fought by Yennefer and the other sorcerers and wizards. This is where we witness Yenn’s magical abilities in action. After that, she departs. Geralt and Ciri ultimately meet at the conclusion of the episode, and the closing scene lays the stage for the events of season 2.
Why Is The Witcher Timeline on Netflix So Complicated?
