Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks trailer from BBC

It’s the festive edition of Doctor Who which can only mean one thing – the Daleks are back with a bang.

Guest star Aisling Bea, who plays storage facility manager Sarah in the feature-length episode, said she had fallen for one of the metal monsters.

“It was glorious to film with the gang on such an iconic show,” she said. “The crew and team were amazing and I fell in love with everyone including the Dalek – who has yet to text me back.”

But the This Way Up star, 37, revealed she hadn’t always been such a huge fan of the show, admitting: “I didn’t realise the Daleks aren’t in every episode.”

This time around, the fearsome foe are not trying to end the universe but have set their sights on a particular prey – The Doctor.

Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor is joined by regular sidekicks John Bishop as Dan and Mandip Gill as Yaz. In the plot the gang are trapped in a time loop. Jodie, who plays the 13th Timelord, says there is a lot of comedy – but it’s still scary.

She said: “It’s full of adventure, there’s a lot at stake, particularly for The Doctor but it’s also the funniest episode we’ve done. What makes a Dalek so frightening is no matter how many times you think you’ve defeated them they always come back. And it’s that never-ending game of tennis, terrifying tennis.”

Jodie, 39, revealed that it had been huge fun to film, adding: “The episode feels like it’s going at a million miles an hour even though you’re hitting the same moment every time.

“It was brilliant because it’s contained, it’s in one location, there’s a real brilliant use of comedy with the Daleks, which was really interesting to do. But also there was just five of us the entire time and that was so much fun.”

She also told how she’d like It’s a Sin actor Lydia West, 28, to follow in her footsteps.

Speaking on Radio 1, she said: “If we had the power to choose – I’m going to pick an actress who I think is really exciting and I think would be phenomenal, an actress called Lydia West. If I had the power.”

She has bowed out after three series. There will be a total of three specials shown in 2022 with the much-anticipated regeneration in the autumn.

*Doctor Who is on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on New Year’s Day at 7pm.
