Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be more like the original series according to the series creators. Spinning off from Star Trek: Discovery, Strange New Worlds will follow Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Spock (Ethan Peck), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), and the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise a decade before the events of the original series. The show is created by veteran Star Trek writer, Alex Kurtzman, Rachel Getting Married scribe, Jenny Lumet, and Titans creator, Akiva Goldsman.
While the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery took place before the events of the original series, starting in the show’s third season, the series jumped forward into the future to avoid any more possible continuity errors that would arise. Star Trek: Picard was the first time fans got a glimpse of the Star Trek since the Kelvin timeline started in 2009. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, by nature of it featuring the U.S.S Enterprise and younger versions of popular characters like Captain Pike and Spock, will have to blend more into the feeling of the original series.
In an interview with THR, Akiva Goldsman discussed how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will have more in common with the original series as it will be episodic. As opposed to the recent Star Trek series like Discovery or Picard, which are serialized with an overarching story through each season. While Strange New Worlds will be an adventure of the week, the characters will still have serialized arcs. Goldsman said:
It’s unlike the other shows in that it’s really episodic. If you think back to The Original Series, it was a tonally more liberal — I don’t mean in terms of politics, but it could sort of be more fluid. Like sometimes Robert Bloch would write a horror episode. Or Harlan Ellison would have “City on the Edge of Forever,” which is hard sci-fi. Then there would be comedic episodes, like “Shore Leave” or “The Trouble With Tribbles.” So [co-showrunner] Henry Alonso Myers and myself are trying to serve that. We’ve all become very enamored, myself included, with serialized storytelling. And I’m talking to you from behind the stage where we’re shooting Picard, which is deeply serialized. But Strange New Worlds is very much adventure-of-the-week but with serialized character arcs
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is one of many different Star Trek projects in development. Strange New Worlds will join the upcoming seasons of Star Trek Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Lower Decks. The franchise will be introduced to a younger audience with Star Trek: Prodigy, which will feature the return of Captain Janeway. Most recently, Paramount slated a new Star Trek movie for June 2023. A serialized show like Star Trek: Strange New World that harkens back to the original series days could be a great way for it to stand out among the rest and keep the franchise fresh for everyone.
Episodic television has seen more of a revival in recent years. While series like The Mandalorian and WandaVision have an overarching story they are telling, the episodes have a very standalone nature to them that can be enjoyed on their own since most of the plotlines don’t converge until the end of the season. They’ve taken full advantage of the unique format of television, and given Star Trek as a franchise got its start on television, it makes a certain amount of sense that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would return to not just the medium but the format that made it successful in the first place.
