The Wonder Years reboot is moving right along, and the first glimpse of the cast together in full costume is here. The original family dramedy series aired for six seasons from 1988 to 1993 on ABC. The Golden Globe-winning show starred Fred Savage in the lead role as teenager Kevin Arnold. Savage, who is now an executive producer on the reboot and is directing the pilot, has officially passed the baton to Elisha “EJ” Williams, who will be playing the lead role as Dean in the new series. The ABC revival will center around a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama during the 1960s.
Executive producer Lee Daniels shared the first cast photo for The Wonder Years reboot on Twitter. The image features Williams in a baseball uniform, smiling with his on-screen family. Dulé Hill will be playing Dean’s dad, Saycon Sengbloh will be playing Dean’s mom, and Laura Kariuki will be playing Dean’s older sister. Though not present in the photo, Don Cheadle will also be part of the revival. He will be the adult version of Dean and serve as the show’s narrator. Take a look at the cast photo below:
Williams also posted a picture to Instagram with Savage on set to thank him, Daniels, and showrunner Saladin K. Patterson for “this amazing opportunity.” The Wonder Years‘ specifics are still unknown, but given the setting, the reboot’s characters will face adversity that the original characters never faced. Historically speaking, Montgomery was a significant city during the civil rights movement, with the Montgomery Bus Boycott taking place in the 1950s. Despite the adversity and injustice, it’s confirmed that the reboot’s family will ensure it’s “the wonder years” for them as well.
