Falcon & Winter Soldier Star Has No Say in John Walker’s MCU Future

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Wyatt Russell doesn’t know if his character has a future in the MCU. Russell plays John Walker in the series, the US government’s new Captain America that made his debut at the end of the show’s first episode. Walker played a prominent role in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s second episode, swooping in to save Bucky and Sam when they found themselves outmatched by the Flag Smashers empowered by the Super Soldier serum.

Walker tried to convince Bucky and Sam to help him in his search for the revolutionaries, but they declined, both because of the fact that Walker is tied up by the government and because he will never be able to live up to Steve Rogers’ legacy. Although not explicit, it seems clear that Walker is being set up as an antagonist for the titular pair, which is likely to play out over the show’s final three episodes. What happens after that for Walker remains unclear.

Russell tells ET that he’s not involved in discussions about his character’s future, directing the interviewer to Marvel head Kevin Feige for the answer to that question. Russell believes that a lot of that decision is based on the fan reaction to the character and that it will become more apparent as time goes on. Russell seems keen on returning at some point but admits that a decision like that is above his pay grade.

You got to call Kevin [Feige]. I don’t know. That’s something that Marvel — you’re not involved at all. That’s just something that, later on, becomes apparent or it doesn’t. And it has a lot to do with what fans think, I think, and how they feel about you, where they want to see things go, and that’s so far out of my control that I just try to do a good job and hopefully this one is good it’s good enough for them to make more. But it’s above my paygrade.

While Walker’s future will certainly become clearer as Falcon and the Winter Soldier progresses, it certainly seems like, at this point, he could return for future projects. Marvel did not do away with any of WandaVision‘s primary antagonists, including Agatha Harkness, Tyler Hayward, and White Vision. It’s safe to say they could do the same with Walker. If he is saved for future projects, though, he may need an upgrade, and all signs point to John Walker taking the Super Soldier serum at some point during the series’ run.

If and when he does, Bucky and Sam will have a harder time going up against him and taking back Steve Rogers’ shield, a point of contention for the pair at the series’ start. How that could factor into future appearances from John Walker remains unclear, but a Super Soldier serum would certainly put him in a position of power different than the one he holds now. How The Falcon and the Winter Soldier factors into the story remains to be seen, but with the MCU setting up its future with its streaming series, John Walker is more than likely not a throwaway character.
