Michaela Conlin, who played Angela Montenegro on Bones, recently discussed the likelihood of a revival. A crime procedural dramedy, Bones premiered on Fox in 2005. It remained a reliable performer for the network throughout its impressive 12 season run, airing in a variety of different time slots. It starred Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance Brennan, who was given the nickname “Bones” by her partner, FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), early on in the show’s run. Though their relationship started as a solely professional one, it eventually turned romantic, making the two one of the most popular will-they-won’t-they couples of the 2000s.
Bones also boasted a talented ensemble cast including T.J. Thyne, Tamara Taylor, John Francis Daley, and John Boyd. Additionally, the series was well-known for its colorful recurring characters, such as A.U.S.A. Caroline Julian (Patricia Belcher) and the various “squints” who assisted at the Jeffersonian. Conlin’s Angela was one of Bones‘ most popular figures, partially due to her close friendship with Brennan. Angela often brought out Bones‘ lighter side through her banter with the other characters, including her eventual husband Hodgins, making her a vital part of the show through its series finale in 2017.
Conlin recently spoke with Collider about her new movie Bad Trip, which just released on Netflix. She also responded to a question about whether there has been any discussion of a Bones revival. Conlin said:
Oh my gosh, I don’t know, that’s a really good question. Not that I’ve heard, but I feel like those things usually come together pretty quickly. I think scheduling would probably be the most difficult thing because everybody’s off doing other things, but it would really be funny and fun to revisit that I’m sure. I talked to Emily yesterday, and Tamara and John Francis Daley and Michael Grant Terry, all those guys. We’re all very in touch, so I’m sure it would just be a question of wrangling everybody together. But who knows? Anything can happen.
Though it seems like Bones just went off the air, in this age of reboots and revivals, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if the show were to return. Series that aired around the same time, such as Dexter and Criminal Minds, are already in the process of coming back. Additionally, Fox has shown its willing to revisit popular series, with the network bringing back The X-Files for two new seasons from 2016-2018 and Prison Break for an additional one in 2017. As viewers continue to discover and revisit Bones via streaming, a revival would be an easy ratings win for the network.
If Bones were to return, it would likely be for a limited series rather than a full season. This would be easier story-wise, as the characters could feasibly come back together to solve a one-off case. That format is also likely the only way the entire cast would be able to return; as Conlin notes, many have other commitments at this time. Taylor is set to star in the Law & Order spinoff Organized Crime, and Boreanaz is currently leading CBS’ SEAL Team. Though there may not be a Bones revival in the works as of now, based on Conlin’s comments, it certainly could happen in the future.
