Marvel Studios considered bringing Aaron Taylor-Johnson back as Quicksilver for WandaVision. In the lead up to the first Marvel Cinematic Universe show on Disney+, plenty of fans believed that Quicksilver would be involved in some fashion. The show revolved around Wanda Maximoff a.k.a., Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and Vision (Paul Bettany) living in a fake reality. Since Pietro Maximoff died in the MCU during Avengers: Age of Ultron, this fake world seemed to be the perfect place to bring back Wanda’s dead brother and give Taylor-Johnson another chance to play the character.
Fans were right to think that Quicksilver would appear in WandaVision, but how he appeared in the series was very different. The version of Pietro included was not played by Taylor-Johnson as Evan Peters stepped into the role instead. Peters’ history of playing Quicksilver in Fox’s X-Men movies immediately sparked speculation that the two franchises were now linked through the multiverse. However, the end of WandaVision proved that this wasn’t the case, as “fake Pietro” was a Westview resident under Agatha Harkness’ control. This made fans even more confused by the choice to use Peters, and those involved with the show said there was no plan B in case he couldn’t do it.
In a recent interview with Comicbook, WandaVision director, Matt Shakman, confirms that there were early conversations to bring Aaron Taylor-Johnson back as Quicksilver. He didn’t reveal how using Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver would’ve potentially changed the show. Shakman did confirm that they moved past this idea fairly quickly, though, and explained how the use of Peters as Quicksilver worked on several levels for WandaVision. Read what Shakman said below:
There definitely were conversations about bringing Aaron Taylor-Johnson back early on, I think Kevin [Feige] talked about this publicly. But it was ruled out fairly early on and we’ve already got Vision from back and so Agatha is bringing Pietro into this world, fake Pietro, into this world to further her agenda. And so having that be a recast Pietro worked on our meta level, but it also made sense thematically when we were talking about grief, which is that grief clouds your judgment, you’re willing to believe things you wouldn’t. You’re living in this fantasy of, ‘If this is my brother, even though I don’t know or feel that he’s my brother, I’m willing to accept it because I miss him so much.’
Based on the story that WandaVision ultimately told, the use of Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver would’ve dramatically changed the series. Wanda initially hesitated to believe that “fake Pietro” was her brother and created a sense of mistrust throughout the show. This would not have happened if she recognized him right away. It also would change the Ralph Bohner reveal, which fans might’ve preferred in this case, as someone who looks exactly like Quicksilver living in Westview would be a tad unbelievable. That said, it is easy to imagine Quicksilver having a larger role in the series and the finale if it was Taylor-Johnson’s version. He would have been another family member that Wanda would have had to say goodbye to as the Hex collapsed. Instead, “fake Pietro” has a rather ambiguous ending to his story.
Since Taylor-Johnson didn’t return as Quicksilver in WandaVision, it is unclear if he’ll ever play the character again in the MCU. There is a chance that Quicksilver could secretly be part of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Scarlet Witch is confirmed to have a big role in the movie, and the Multiverse aspect could provide a path for another version of Quicksilver played by Taylor-Johnson to join the MCU. Only time will tell whether or not the MCU’s Pietro will be back.
