SpongeBob SquarePants Prequel Show Trailer Shows First Look At Kamp Koral

Everyone’s favorite sea sponge is back as a 10-year-old kid in the new trailer for Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under YearsSpongeBob SquarePants has cranked out 13 seasons since first airing in 1999, making it Nickelodeon’s longest-running and most successful show of all time. The original series was created by the late Stephen Hillenburg, an animator and marine science educator whose disinterest in SpongeBob sequels and spin-offs was always well-documented.

In a controversial move after Hillenburg’s passing in 2018, Nickelodeon announced Kamp Koral, a 13-episode CG-animated prequel show that follows the adventures of young SpongeBob, Sandy, and Patrick at sleepaway camp. The series will see the return of many original cast members including Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), and Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), and the first six episodes are set to premiere on Paramount+ on March 4, 2021.  The release date of the series’ remaining seven episodes has yet to be announced.

But luckily Paramount+ released the official trailer to hold fans over while they await the show’s release. The first look trailer sets up the prequel with a voice-over that says, “Before the pineapple, before the Krusty Krab, there was Kamp Koral.” It then shows SpongeBob’s crew and other campers zip-lining, eating Plankton-prepared green mush at an outdoor cafeteria, playing tether ball, doing group exercises (led by Larry the Lobster), and, of course, jellyfishing. Mr. Krabs also makes an appearance as a cash-hungry camp counselor and Squidward looks to be a less-than-enthusiastic troop leader.

While the trailer looks fun, it does little to alleviate the fear that Kamp Koral will further cement the decline of SpongeBob. Fans of the original series noted the plummet in quality following Hillenburg’s departure from the show after The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie premiered in 2004. The show has since opted for a more kid-friendly, slapstick style of humor in lieu of the creative storylines and clever jokes that made the original show so popular. Kamp Koral is clearly targeting a younger audience and it may find success among that demographic.

But as cute as a young Sandy Cheeks with braces is and as nostalgic as the iconic sea creatures’ reunion might be, the spin-off series doesn’t seem poised to capture the same magic as Hillenburg’s work. Perhaps the charming camp setting and the beloved characters will provide fans of the original series enough reasons to check out Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years. It’s more likely, however, that die-hard SpongeBob loyalists are decidedly not ready to watch the franchise continue its journey toward rock bottom.
