TV shows to look forward to in 2021 from glossy dramas to gritty crime thrillers

It’s time to welcome in the new year and look forward to all the new TV shows which will be gracing our TV screens in 2021.

While it’s cold and grey outside, there will thankfully be plenty to watch on the telly.

The coronavirus pandemic stalled many productions in 2020, but most managed to get finished eventually after being pushed back by several months.

It means this year is already shaping up to be a cracker with shows featuring some of the biggest names heading to TV.

As well as a new glossy series from Nicole Kidman, Suranne Jones is leading the cast of a new crime thriller and Lily James is bringing some period drama sparkle.

Let’s take a look at some of the TV gems we can look forward to in 2021.

Vigil – BBC One

Suranne Jones stars opposite Martin Compston and Rose Leslie in Vigil

Suranne Jones is back in this six-part crime drama playing a police officer opposite Line of Duty star Martin Compston and Game of Thrones’ Rose Leslie.

The former Corrie actress plays DCI Amy Silva who is investigating the disappearance of Scottish fishing trawler and a mysterious death on a Trident nuclear submarine.

Murky conspiracies are abound in this gripping story which pits the police against the Navy and the security services.

It’s expected to hit screens this spring.

Nine Perfect Strangers

Nicole Kidman is returning to TV in another adaptation of a Liane Moriarty book

Nicole Kidman provided some of 2020’s most-talked about TV with her starring turn in The Undoing opposite Hugh Grant.

This year, she’s back with another griping drama based on a best-selling book by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty.

In a role that’s miles apart from her Big Little Lies character, Nicole plays a mysterious Russian woman who runs a luxury wellness retreat for troubled wealthy clients.

After ditching their phones and settling in for a relaxing break, the guests soon find out all is not as it seems.

The show co-stars Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans and Michael Shannon and will be on Sky Atlantic in the spring.

The Pursuit Of Love

The stars of this new romantic drama may have made more headlines than the show itself, but that’s not to say it’s not worth a watch.

Lily James and Dominic West star in an adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s novel, which was filmed last summer before the pair were caught in a clinch in Italy.

In this three-parter, Lily plays husband-hunting Linda Radlett whose search for love takes her to Paris.

Expect flawless costumes and plenty of romance when it airs on BBC One this spring.

It’s a Sin

Anyone who fell in love with Queer As Folk back in the 1990s is sure to get hooked on writer Russell T Davies’ new offering.

It’s a loose prequel to the groundbreaking original series set a decade earlier in the 1980s.

Over the course of five episodes, It’s a Sin follows a group of teenagers in London as they navigate the city’s gay scene.

It stars Years & Years’ Olly Alexander and the supporting cast includes big names including Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Fry and Keeley Hawes.

It’s a Sin lands on Channel 4 on January 22.

Impeachment: American Crime Story

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton’s sex scandal is the focus on the new American Crime Story series

After previously tackling the OJ Simpson murder trial and the killing of Gianni Versace, the new series of American Crime Story turns its focus on US politics.

Season three follows the sex scandal that engulfed former U.S. President Bill Clinton after he was accused of romping with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

The show is based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book A Vast Conspiracy and Monica herself is among the producers while Clive Owen takes the role of the embattled politician.

If you’re after sex, politics and a touch of nostagia, this could be the show for you.

However, thanks to delays caused by the pandemic, you’ll have to wait until it airs over the summer on BBC Two.

Landscapers

Olivia Colman plays a real life murderer in new series The Landscapers

She’s played the Queen The Crown and a police officer in Broadchurch, but this time Olivia Colman will find herself on the wrong side of the law.

This new black comedy tells the story of the Mansfield Murders – a real life crime that gripped the nation.

The Oscar winner plays Susan Edwards, who along with her husband Christopher, murdered her parents and buried them in the back garden.

After plundering the dead couple’s bank accounts, they spent more than a decade weaving a web of lies – even sending Christmas cards signed by mum and dad to keep up the pretence they were still alive.

The real life Susan and Christopher Edwards were eventually caught and jailed in 2014.

The script has been written by Olivia’s husband Ed Sinclair and the show is expected to land this summer on Sky Atlantic.
