Is The Book Of Boba Fett Mandalorian Season 3? Everything We Know

Star Wars has revealed that The Book of Boba Fett is coming to Disney+ in December 2021, but is this a spinoff or simply the subtitle of The Mandalorian season 3? The Mandalorian season 2 ended in epic fashion, but there was a surprise waiting for viewers who hung around after the main action concluded. The Mandalorian season 2 finale’s post-credits scene sees Boba Fett and Fennec Shand returning to Tatooine, paying a visit to Jabba’s Palace where, several years after the Hutt’s death, Bib Fortuna amusingly reigns supreme. Boba and Fennec dispatch of Bib and the other goons in the palace, with the bounty hunter taking his place on the throne, and a title reveal for The Book of Boba Fett.

It’s easy to see both where this story might had and why it’s happening. Boba Fett has long been a popular character, and The Mandalorian season 2 has only helped his reputation grow, so Disney understandably wants to cash-in on that. In terms of plot, then it’ll seemingly see Boba Fett establishing some level of control on Tatooine. He may be a simple man making his way through the galaxy, but this could be an attractive and lucrative position for someone with his skills. The question, then, is whether this is its own thing – a movie or TV show – or part of The Mandalorian season 3.

So far, Disney has not yet confirmed what form The Book of Boba Fett will take, though it is interesting the spinoff (assuming that’s what it is) has been revealed now, rather than with the other upcoming Star Wars shows unveiled at the Disney Investor Day on December 10, 2020. However, at this stage it seems that The Book of Boba Fett will not be The Mandalorian season 3, even though both are coming in December 2021. Back in November, it was reported that a Boba Fett spinoff was set to film before The Mandalorian season 3 and, while further shows have since been announced, it’s more plausible that is still accurate. The Mandalorian remains Disney+’s flagship show, and so drastically changing its focus would be a risky and rather unprecedented move.

There would be a great level of difficulty in replacing The Mandalorian in his own show with Boba Fett, which would likely see a backlash from fans, not least because it would mean the main storylines have to be put on hold. While the season 2 finale is a major ending for Din Djarin and Baby Yoda’s journey so far, it also doesn’t remotely feel like that end of their stories, so it’d be a big surprise for Disney to pull something like this, even if it can’t be completely ruled out just yet.

It’s also perfectly plausible that both The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian season 3 can air in December 2021. If The Book of Boba Fett is a 3-4 episode event series or even a Disney+ movie, then it could begin airing and wrap-up in time for The Mandalorian season 3’s release date on Christmas Day. Disney is doing everything it can to expand its roster of shows right now, so it would fit far more with those plans for The Book of Boba Fett to be its own thing rather than replacing something it already has (and that is massively successful to boot). They might be close together, but since Disney seemingly wants gaps between all of its Marvel and Star Wars content to be as small as possible, then that’s seemingly the point.
