Hayden Christensen’s Daughter Doesn’t Know He’s Darth Vader Yet

While Hayden Christensen will be reprising his role as Darth Vader for the upcoming Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, his own daughter still doesn’t know that her father plays the iconic villain. Christensen first played Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode II- Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith, two of the three prequel films that explored Anakin’s transformation into Darth Vader. Fifteen years later, Christensen is set to return to the role in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show.

The much-anticipated new series Obi-Wan Kenobi picks up ten years after the prequels and will also bring back Ewan McGregor as the titular character. When audiences last saw Christensen in the role, Vader had already embraced the dark side and after engaging in a duel, McGregor’s Obi-Wan left him legless and burning on the shore of a lava pit. Unknown to Obi-Wan, Emperor Palpatine saved the nearly dead Vader and helped him to recover. Many fans hope the series will similarly help redeem Christensen’s character, who was widely criticized for his often awkward and unbelievable depiction in the prequels.

Christensen has a daughter with actress Rachel Bilson, who recently spoke to Us Weekly about how their daughter Briar still has no idea about her father’s on-screen alter-ego. Bilson commented, “Luckily she’s not aware that her dad is one of the biggest villains of all time. When that [time] comes, I don’t know how that’ll probably fare in school because nobody will mess with her!” Though Christensen has yet to fill his daughter in on the news, the actor has expressed his own excitement to be returning to the Star Wars universe.

Deborah Chow, best known for helming two episodes of The Mandalorian, will direct Obi-Wan Kenobi and the six-episode limited series is set to begin filming in spring 2021. Having a female director will bring a fresh perspective to the male-centric narrative, as well as Christensen’s own life experience, since he’s now fifteen years older. This will also mark the first time that Christensen’s Vader narrative will be controlled by Disney, as it acquired Lucasfilm in the years since the prequels.

Though it must be a complicated conversation for any celebrity to let their children know that they’re famous, Christensen has an especially delicate task ahead of him. Finding out that your father is a movie star is one thing, but finding out that he plays one of the most infamous villains of all time is an entirely different thing. No matter when Christensen decides to break the news to his daughter, may the Force be with him.
