The Mandalorian season 3 might begin filming this month. Jon Favreau’s live-action Star Wars TV show just returned for its second season on Disney+. Although subscribers have only seen a fraction of what the new season has in store, reactions to The Mandalorian season 2 remain high. After the introduction of Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) and the return of Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) in the first episode, viewers are thrilled to see what comes next.
There are still several episodes left in The Mandalorian season 2, but plans are already in place for the series to continue. Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to confirm the Disney+ original series has been renewed. However, Favreau has already confirmed that he is working on The Mandalorian season 3. The second season was already filming by the time season one arrived in 2019, but the same schedule hasn’t been met for the third season. Favreau has said that filming will begin in 2020, and it might start even sooner than expected.
Details on The Mandalorian season 3’s production are starting to surface. A recent listing by Production Weekly revealed that the working title for next season is “Buccaneer.” Now, Deadline has provided an update that points to production starting very soon. According to the report, filming could begin as soon as next week. This isn’t a guarantee, though, as it could be late November or early December before production gets rolling.
The plan for The Mandalorian season 3 to begin filming by the end of 2020 was already promising, but the possibility of it starting this month is even better. Favreau has been confident that production shouldn’t be affected by COVID-19 due to the smaller sets and crew made possible by the Volume filming methods. However, that might not be possible with the United States continuing to post record highs in positive cases per day and the possibility of another shutdown.
If The Mandalorian season 3 does begin filming this month and move forward without too much trouble, the show should be on track to return to Disney+ in 2021. The first season occupied almost every Friday of the last two months of 2019 and season 2 is scheduled to have a similar rollout in 2020. With The Mandalorian season 2’s strong buzz, there’s no reason to believe that season 3 won’t follow suit. Lucasfilm does have the untitled Cassian Andor show starring Diego Luna set to begin production by the end of 2020 too, so both shows could be ready to go at the same time. Since The Mandalorian is a known commodity and fans expect to see a new season every year, it could arrive in late 2021 and push the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel to 2022.
Of course, the start of filming on The Mandalorian season 3 will further pique the interest of fans depending on which characters are spotted. Lucasfilm has done a good job keeping surprises under wraps, but many will be anxious to know if Cobb Vanth, Boba Fett, Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), and others could be back next season. Barring some major twist, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and The Child aka Baby Yoda will be back to lead the show, but who knows which other Star Wars characters could appear next.
