*Spoiler warning for Loki episode 3*
Marvel’s Disney Plus series Loki has confirmed that Tom Hiddleston’s character is bisexual.
The titular God of Mischief has received their own six-part series on the Disney streaming service and the latest episode has made his sexuality official.
In the third instalment set on the moon Lamentis-1 in the year 2077, Loki ( Tom Hiddleston ) spends time with an alternate version of themselves from another timeline who is deemed a “variant” by the all-powerful time-travelling organisation known as the Time Variance Authority (TVA).
This “variant” is a female version of Loki who goes by the name of “Sylvie” as they become fugitives of the TVA and become stranded on Lamentis-1 which imminently faces a nearby planet crashing into it.
As they wait to make their escape, Loki and Sylvie discuss their lives in a discussion that also sees them discuss the role of love and romance in their lives.
Sylvie, played by Sophia Di Martino, asks: “How about you? You’re a prince. Must’ve been would-be princesses or perhaps, another prince.”
Loki then responds: “A bit of both. I suspect the same as you.”
Following the episode’s release on Disney Plus, executive producer and director Kate Herron took to Twitter to discuss the big moment.
Kate penned on Twitter: “From the moment I joined @LokiOfficial it was very important to me, and my goal, to acknowledge Loki was bisexual. It is a part of who he is and who I am too.
“I know this is a small step but I’m happy, and heart is so full, to say that this is now Canon in #mcu#Loki “.
A number of fans responded to Kate’s tweet and praised the representation that Loki has given to bisexual people in the MCU.
One Twitter user penned: “I literally started crying so much i had to pause the show before continuing, thank you so much, the fact that we can now say loki is canonical bi in the mcu means so much”.
Another wrote: “this means more than you could ever know. all my life i’ve been desperate to see people like me on screen, and the lack of bisexual representation was appalling. but now, confirming that a character i’ve loved for so long is just like me means the world 🙂 THANK YOU”.
Meanwhile, another Loki fan commented: “honestly i screamed i could literally cry tears of absolute elation thank you so much you have done something i never thought would happen in the mcu”.
Elsewhere, a different viewer noted: “Small moment, yet I’m sure it’ll mean so much to a lot of fans. Keep on keeping on!”
Finally, one Twitter user concluded: “This is absolutely awesome that you were able to include this & to make it Canon in the MCU. It means so much to so many people who already identified with Loki. So to have their sexuality validated on screen is a monumental step forward & to have it happen in Pride month. TYSM”.
The moment comes after an earlier episode saw a TVA document classify Loki’s sex as “fluid”, possibly given due to Loki’s ability to shapeshift.
Speaking to Inverse about this detail, head writer Michael Waldron commented on this: “I know how many people identify with Loki in particular and are eager for that representation, especially with this character. We worked really hard .”
Meanwhile, Hiddleston himself noted to the publication that the facet has been present in the comics and in the mythological history of the Norse god.
The actor said: “It’s always been there in the comics for some time and in the history of the character for hundreds, if not thousands of years.”
The Disney Plus series has three episodes remaining.
The series’ cast also includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Sasha Lane, and Owen Wilson.
Loki releases new episodes every week at 8am GMT on Wednesday mornings.
