Emmerdale: Charles Anderson discovers he has a daughter
Emmerdale aired the arrival of a new character on Thursday night, as Ethan Anderson’s mother Esme made her debut.
The character has been missing for over a decade, after walking out on husband Charles and their son when Ethan was a child.
Ethan has been desperate to know what happened and why she left, with Charles only revealing that they rowed the day before she left.
But the truth behind her disappearance and what really happened was exposed in the latest episode of the ITV soap, and it seems both Esme and Charles were hiding things all along.

Who is Ethan’s mother? Does Ethan have a sister?
A recent episode of Emmerdale confirmed that newcomer Esme was the mother of Ethan, and the ex-wife of vicar Charles.
She had left years earlier without a trace, while it is not yet known how long the character will be on the show for.
Esme did confirm she was pregnant when she left though, and that she recently reconnected with her and Charles’ secret daughter – meaning Ethan has a sister he didn’t know about.
What happened between Charles and Esme?

Esme revealed it wasn’t until some time after she fled that she realised she had been suffering with postnatal depression.
She and Charles grew apart, with them rowing all the time and Charles claimed she had changed as a person.
Esme explained she was anxious all the time, and felt she didn’t deserve her family or Ethan, causing her to flee when she learned she was expecting another baby.

Charles was having an affair too, something he blamed Esme for – while he now realises that he had not spotted the signs of her PND.
Esme vanished but did try to get in touch, only for Charles to “make it impossible” after she didn’t show up on one occasion.
She never saw Ethan again, and never told Charles about their secret child who she placed up for adoption after struggling to cope.

Ethan’s mother is played by actress Eva Fontaine, who has actually been on the soap before in minor roles.
Eva has been in a number of other roles, including Holby City, Casualty and she also starred in EastEnders in 2019 for a handful of episodes.
The actress may be best known for playing Faith Walker on BBC soap Doctors between 2001 and 2006.
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
