022: Life During Wartime (2009)

Knowing his eerie, to-the-bone portrayals of secret-Suburbia divides audiences, Todd Solondz’ black-as-treacle comedy doesn’t provide any new jokes, characters or even stories (it being a ‘rethinking’ of his magnum opus Happiness, 1998). Instead, Hollywood’s unwelcome auteur focuses on providing misguidedly brave vignettes and criticisms of hypocritical, all-American America.

THE GOOD: Predictably strong performances from Allison Janney, Charlotte Rampling and Ciaran Hinds.

THE BAD: It’s no Happiness, Welcome to the Dollhouse or Palindromes.

THE UGLY: Human existence.
