WandaVision had an alternate finale scene between Scarlet Witch and Vision. It’s been more than a month since Marvel Studios kicked off Phase 4 with their first Disney+ series. While the MCU has moved on to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, new information about WandaVision has been revealed thanks to its showrunner, Matt Shakman.
Marvel Studios took a big swing with WandaVision, as it was nothing like anything from the MCU’s past. Mining narrative and visual inspiration from the iconic sitcoms of the past, it was both fun and intriguing with the premise that two Avengers would move to a suburb to live a quiet life. In reality, however, it’s a piece about Wanda’s trauma over the years, capped off by Vision’s death in Avengers: Infinity War. Over nine episodes, the lovers were reunited and given the chance to experience normal family life, but since everything was created through Chaos Magic, the spell had to be taken down, resulting in the couple bidding each other goodbye again.
Speaking with The Empire Film Podcast, Shakman reveals that the heartbreaking final scene between Wanda and Vision in the finale was filmed early on. While WandaVision‘s ending was reworked a few times due to several reasons, it was mostly maintained throughout as it was part of his original pitch. But one moment from it was scrapped; apparently, Scarlet Witch was going to use a spell to bind back Vision to her. Shakman said:
That scene was shot early, it was shot a long time ago. It was early in the production schedule because it was written early in the process. And it was the heart of the show for me, some of that language was part of my pitch. It was originally, she had to perform a binding spell to bind her back to him. So that sort of magic piece of it shifted.
Shakman didn’t reveal why they opted to cut the moment, but while he didn’t elaborate on how that was going to look, it’s possible that it could be a reverse effect of how Wanda unintentionally created Vision in Westview. In the end, just like everyone else in her fantasy world, the synthezoid disintegrated as the hex came down. It was a gradual disappearance, but as the couple bid each other goodbye, there was a promise that somehow they’ll be reunited again. The WandaVision scene was quiet and somber, making it so much sadder and effective, so in hindsight, everything might have worked out for the best.
Given what’s known about the cut scene, it would’ve also further emphasized how powerful Scarlet Witch has become since the start of the show. As with the hex, she didn’t really understand how exactly she created the pocket reality in Westview. It was only when Agatha Harkness explained to her that it was Chaos Magic that she found out. And yet, the WandaVision finale almost showed her actively reversing what she created by binding Vision back to her.
