The world-spanning excavations of three talking toys – a renegade cowboy, a native American and a cocksure talking horse. It sounds like the set-up of a Dad joke, but A Town Called Panic, a French-Belgian-Luxembourgian animation, didn’t have me rolling in my seat laughing. Glaringly similar to Toy Story, stop-motion animators Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar annoyingly coast on charm to make this 75 minute feature work.
Standard stop-motion protocol, A Town Called Panic looks absolutely lovely. The trios hallucinatory adventures take them to the tundra with snow made of cotton wool, and right down to the Earth’s orange felt core. It’s childlike, borderline crude scenery reminded me of BBC’s The Mighty Boosh – anarchic, garish, and just a little bit shit.
