#168: The Loved Ones (2009)

Drilling me softly.

Straight from down under, Sean Byrne’s debut feature The Loved Ones is strikingly familiar, yet totally anomalous in a sea of easy-shock horror films.

Although the central premise of a jilted, psychotic teenager seeking revenge on her should-be high school sweetheart isn’t all that inspiring, the way Byrne is able to give us nail biting thrills alongside comedic blows to the belly suggests an Australian filmmaker with a lot of admiration for genre pieces, but still audacious enough to break the rules.

★★★☆☆☆
