Spanish horror from executive producer Guillermo del Toro. This impressive directorial debut from Juan Antonio Bayona follows very much in the vein of Pan’s Labyrinth by creating suspense through intense emotional underpinnings. Refreshing, yet has a firm foot in classic, The Haunting style chills. Fun, jumpy and ‘worth the Netflix’ price, but not essential.
THE GOOD: It’s not a slasher movie.
THE BAD: It’s not *really* a del Toro movie. A bit more surrealism wouldn’t go a miss.
