Continuing my Mike Leigh binge, his most recent film is another bleakly beautiful drama on four primary characters, and there questionably happy existences over the case of one year. With seasonal episodes, whether it’s the warmth and vibrancy of the English BBQ summer or the greying winter, the timeless vulnerability of human existence is effortlessly watchable. Very Leigh, very good.
THE GOOD: Some fantastic dialogue – ‘It’s the young person’s prerogative to be noisy’.
THE BAD: Perhaps not a fantastic starting point into Leigh’s canon of work. Too glum for some.
