Uber-indie director Kelly Reichardt’s Old Joy looks at the camaraderie between two best-buds on their isolated weekend camping trip. Mark (Daniel London) and Kurt (Will Oldham, aka Americana troubadour Bonnie Prince Billy), are atypical of many thirtysomething men in American film, in that they are incapable of illustrating their emotions. With so much tension all-too-comfortably bubbling away underneath, and with very little else on display in regards to drama or narrative, Old Joy is a frustrating watch; with very little for even the most Bonniest of lasses and Billy goats.
THE GOOD: A) Yo La Tengo soundtrack, when we get a chance to hear it.
B) Will Oldham is a doobie brother.
THE BAD: Lack of authorship and focus.
THE UGLY: How this seems like a pretty big mis-swing, on all accounts.
